Growing your herbs and plants to use in spells is a beautiful way to boost your magick. You don’t need to be a Garden Witch to have a magickal garden. All you need is a green thumb. There are a variety of gardens you can plant, each serving a magickal purpose. You can also focus on having different herbs, so you’re always ready when needed for a spell or ritual. You don’t have to limit yourself to one type of garden either, so long as you have enough space to separate the gardens to avoid clashing energies. To get you started on what type of garden would fit you best, we’ll go over some common garden themes and popular herbs and plants and their uses.
Types of Gardens
Moon Garden
While the day offers an abundance of flowers, the night also has its fair share. These flowers only tend to bloom at night and will either have died or closed off the next morning. The night flowers tend to have a stronger, more relaxing odor that can be key to meditations or relaxing sleep. If you’re more of a night owl and prefer to do your spells and rituals at night, then this is the garden for you. Some common moon plants to use are moonflowers, white roses, night-blooming jasmines, evening stock, night scented orchid.
Elemental Garden
In an Elemental Garden, you divide your garden into four sections, each dedicated to a specific element. This type of garden is great if you perform a lot of elemental spells. You can perform the spell in the specific element section to get a magickal boost and have a higher success rate. Try to divide the sections with rocks or a small fence to prevent the plants from crossing over the sections and causing magick interference. Here are some plants you can choose for each element’s section.
Goddess Garden
Plants have always been associated with Gods and Goddesses, more so to Goddesses due to the feminine charm. So, to show your Goddess that you love and admire them, you can create a garden in their honor. Every Goddess is different in what kind of flower they prefer, so you may have to research what types of plants and flowers you’ll need to grow. It’s best to have a specific Goddess in mind or have a connection with. If you were to create a Goddess Garden at random, it may not attract any Goddess or attract one that is not compatible with you and your magick. The base of the Goddess Garden can be similar, but where the garden changes into a specific Goddess Garden is in the plants you put in it.
Medicinal Garden
If you are a Green Witch or are interested in the medicinal properties of herbs, then a Medicinal Garden is the one for you. You have the freedom to plant any plant or flower that has medicinal properties. No two Medicinal Gardens are the same as the gardens cater to the needs of the Witch. So if you want to go this garden route, take note of what types of healing spells or potions you make so you can plant what you need. And be sure always to thank the Earth every time you harvest for your medicinal uses.
Creating Your Garden with a Variety of Plants
If you are not sure about setting up a themed garden, you can take your own route and plant whatever you want in your garden. You can create your garden to cater to your interests, needs, and what you like to smell and see blooming in your yard. If taking this route, there are a few things to consider: You want to be sure your climate and soil can help you grow your desired plants. But it would help if you also created a garden altar and include some top herb choices due to their high use in Witchcraft.
Setting up an Altar
A Garden Altar gives you a place to meditate and work in peace amongst your garden. You can create an altar with a moss-covered rock big enough for you to sit on. You can set up privacy screens to create a shady spot to rest. Or you can buy or make a small table where you can place your garden tools, dried herbs, or stones, so you have a beacon of energy in your garden.
Top Herb Choices and their Uses
Sage
Sage is the go-to cleansing herb. It is highly recommended to have this herb planted in abundance, so you will always be ready for a cleansing ritual.
Rosemary
Rosemary is the best herb to use in protection spells.
Lavender
Lavender is the ideal plant for aromatherapy to help reduce stress and strengthen focus.
Basil
Basil is perfect for helping attract luck and wealth.
Lemon balm
This plant can help with restless sleep and can ease anxiety and depressive states.
Now that you have a good idea of the different types of gardens you can grow, it is time to decide if you want a specifically themed garden or are open to having various plants instead.
You have to decide what route you want to go on to ensure that the proper energy is directed into your garden. As with all spells, focus is critical, and having a wandering mind can hinder the potency of the plants you grow and can even prevent the plants from growing.
You also want to be aware of whether your climate will allow the plants you want to grow properly or if you will need to adjust. But with those key points in mind, any Witch should have an enjoyable time creating, planting, and maintaining their magick garden.
