Troubleshooting Ineffective Spells

As practicing Witches, we know that in real life, magick doesn’t work like in the movies. We don’t wave a wand, say “alohomora,” and then a door unlocks. But just because it doesn’t look like the movies doesn’t mean magick isn’t real or that our spells don’t see results. We wouldn’t do spells if they were ineffective!

So, if you’ve done a spell and aren’t seeing the results you expected, it could mean the spell failed. If that’s the case, you’ll need to determine why it failed and then troubleshoot from there. But first, you need to determine if the spell actually failed.

Determining if a Spell Failed

It is important to really examine if a spell failed before trying to fix and recast it.

The first thing to look at is timing. Did you give your spell enough time to manifest? Spell work almost never has an overnight result. Some spells take months to fully manifest. Did you set a time frame for the spell when you cast it? If you didn’t give it an exact frame, think about how long it has been since you cast it and if you’ve truly given it enough time. For example, if you cast a spell to bring yourself more wealth, you’ll likely need several weeks because that often comes in the form of a new job. Ethical love spells draw potential romantic partners to you but rely on you to do the work to see if it is a match—which doesn’t happen in a day.

The second thing to look at is unexpected manifestations. These usually occur when your spell isn’t specific enough. Did you ask for money and then find a forgotten $5 bill in your pocket? The spell worked, just not how you were expecting. Examine what you were working towards manifesting with the spell and things that have happened since. Did the spell manifest in a way you didn’t realize?

If you’ve given the spell plenty of time and you see no evidence of an unexpected manifestation, then your spell likely failed. If so, it could have been for internal or external causes.

Internal Causes

The most common reason for spell failure, internal causes, are things within our own control that affect the spell. Here are common internal causes and how to fix them.

Problem with Spell Intention

Your intention is the goal of the spell. It is what you are trying to manifest. There are two extremes that cause failure here. One is an intention that is too vague, meaning the universe can’t manifest something to achieve the request. For example, “I want a better life.” What does that mean? It isn’t specific enough. You need to think about what would be better for you—for example, a spell to help you find a better job or a new friend.

But be careful because the other end is a spell that is too specific. A too-specific spell prevents the universe from manifesting your intention in unexpected, better ways. If you ask for a particular job, it prevents the universe from manifesting one you didn’t think about that would be a better fit.

You also want your intention to be attainable and not too greedy. A spell to win the lottery is not likely to work.

No Mundane Effort

As we said before, magick in real life doesn’t work like the movies. We don’t wave a wand and make stacks of money appear. Spell work helps the universe put the components we need to fulfill our intention in our path. You can’t do a spell to make new friends or get a new romantic partner and then never leave the house.

Lack of Focus, Belief, or Desire

If your heart isn’t in it, it affects the spell. If your focus isn’t truly set on your intention, if you don’t really believe the spell will work, or if you aren’t sure this is what you really want, it won’t work. You also need to raise enough energy for the spell to begin manifesting properly. If you don’t raise enough energy, the spell isn’t empowered enough to succeed.

Wrong Tools or Ingredients

Circumstances often require substitutions for spells, which we fully support because it also helps personalize a spell someone else wrote for you. But not all substitutions are created equal! And not all ingredients work well together. An improper substitution can severely impact the spell’s energy and cause failure. Ingredients with conflicting energies can cancel each other out, also preventing success. Double and triple-check your ingredients' correspondences to ensure they will work properly towards your intention.

External Causes

These are causes that impact spells that are outside our control. These are often harder to fix than internal causes and may require a complete reworking of the spell. They are difficult to diagnose, so you may not even be able to discover that something like this was the cause of the failure.

Other Energy or Spell Work Blocked Your Intention

Energy builds up even if you aren’t doing spell work. Add that in, and even more energy builds. If your space hasn’t been cleansed in a while, outside energies or stale energies in your space could be blocking your spell’s intention from manifesting.

Other Witches are out there doing their own spell work as well, which can impact yours. Maybe they raised more energy than you did, and the energy of their spell is blocking yours. Maybe they are going after the same intention as you. Maybe you told them about it, and they are actively working against you.

To fix these types of external issues, don’t tell anyone about the spell until it is complete and manifested. Do cleanses frequently and create energy barricades in your altar space to keep outside energy out. Try the spell again.

It Isn’t Meant to Be

This can be tough to swallow, and often, it isn’t clear that this was the cause of failure until much later. But if the Universe knows what you’re going after isn’t right, it won’t help you manifest it. Adjusting your intentions and goals and reworking the spell is the best solution here.
