Ostara Kitchen Witchery

Ostara Kitchen Witchery

Feasts are a staple of a sabbat celebration. And while there is magick in setting your feast with symbols of the season, you can add intention and more powerful magick to what you consume this Ostara by choosing your ingredients with care and engaging in kitchen witchery when preparing your feast. The symbols of the season all have their own magick and energies, so you can create a feast full of intention and specific magick. At Ostara, eggs, flowers, and seeds are all included in feasts as symbols of new life and spring. Here are the magickal properties and energies of a few different foods you can incorporate into an Ostara feast.

Seeds

Pine nuts

Planet: Mars

Element: Air

Energies: money, physical strength, love

The edible seeds of pine trees are called pine nuts. Roughly 20 pine species produce pine nuts large enough for harvesting for human consumption. Though other species produce edible seeds as well, they aren’t large enough to warrant harvesting for human consumption. Pine nuts have been consumed in Europe and Asia since at least the Paleolithic period. They are a great source of several micronutrients, including manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, copper, and vitamins E, K, and B. Pine nuts can be used to make coffee, baked in bread, added to salads, used to make pesto, or used as a topping for many meat, fish, and vegetable dishes.

If you are working towards new money ventures (such as searching for a new job or starting a new business), visualize your desired outcome when preparing and eating pine nuts. If you are rebuilding physical strength after an illness or starting a new workout program, focus your intention on that desired strength as you prepare and eat them.

Sesame seeds

Planet: Sun

Element: Fire

Energies: sex, fertility, protection, money

Considered the oldest oilseed crop, sesame seeds are mostly native to sub-Saharan Africa. The seeds themselves are used in cuisines around the world, as is the oil produced from the seeds. The byproduct leftover from extracting the oil is rich in protein and often used as feed for livestock and poultry. Whole seeds provide several B vitamins, as well as iron, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, and calcium.

Mix sesame seeds with honey to increase sexual desire in yourself and bring sexual attraction to you. Sesame cakes should be eaten to enhance fertility and encourage conception. Visualize the protection you seek before sprinkling sesame seeds on your food. Pair them with other money-drawing foods to further draw those energies into you.

Additional seeds to consider using at Ostara: poppy seeds (for fertility, love); sunflower seeds (for luck, fertility); caraway seeds (for fertility, love); fennel seeds (for strength, weight loss, protection); and carob seeds (for love, money).

Flowers

Lavender

Planet: Mercury

Element: Air

Energies: harmony, peace, friendship, romance, psychic awareness

Lavender has many uses in Wicca, usually in the form of incense or essential oils, perhaps dried petals or fresh blooms. But lavender is edible, and not only is it an elegant addition to many sweet dishes, but it is also a great way to draw its powers and energies into you. It is in the mint family, though the flavor profile of the buds is closer to lemon or citrus while the leaves are similar to rosemary. English lavender is the species most commonly used for culinary purposes.

Use lavender buds in baking to promote peace and cooperation. Sugar infused with lavender for two weeks can be used in baking to promote harmony, love, or friendship. Use lavender in tea to promote sleep and psychic awareness.

Rose

Planet: Venus

Element: Water

Energies: happiness, love, psychic awareness

With well over 300 species, roses are perhaps the most well-known flower in the world. Not just ornamental plants, roses are sent to signify romance and love and are used in many perfumes. It is frequently used as a symbol and is found in countless works of art. Eaten and used for thousands of years, there is a long history of the rose in cultures around the world. It is said that a few wandering mystics in India live solely on the sustenance of roses, partaking in no food other than the “queen of flowers.”

Rose water can be used to infuse ice cream, whipped cream, and other foods as part of a love diet. Fresh rose petals can be sprinkled on ice cream or frozen yogurt. Anything that uses the aromatic scent of roses as part of the culinary experience (drawing on the Air element) will enhance psychic awareness. Candied/crystalized rose petals can be eaten to spark happiness.

Other flowers to consider using in your Ostara feast: saffron (for happiness, spirituality); true marigold (for happiness, protection); mustard flower (for protection, mental ability, dispelling evil spirits).

Eggs

Eggs might be considered THE symbol of the season. So they should definitely be a part of your Ostara feast in as many facets as possible. They are a sun symbol, a fertility symbol, a symbol of rebirth, and so much more. They have each of the four elements contained within them: the shell is Earth, the membrane is Air, the yolk is Fire, and the whites are Water. Chicken eggs are the most commonly used in culinary forms, from scrambled eggs to what’s required for baking. However, there are many edible eggs, such as quail, duck, and goose. Eggs have many uses in magick, but there is also magick in consuming them.

Eat eggs for wishing, prosperity, and enhancing potential. Eggs can also be eaten to enhance fertility. When cooking hardboiled eggs, focus your intention on a bright future, concentrating those energies into each egg. Visualize those energies exploding through your body as you eat the egg.

Seeds, flowers, and eggs have double magick in an Ostara feast, bringing their innate energies as well as enhancing the power of the sabbat. And there are many foods that belong on an Ostara table that haven’t been covered here, such as rabbit and breads. Those have their own magick as well!
