The moon is a vital part of Witchcraft. We charge crystals and charms under its light, follow the moon’s cycles, and the triple form of the goddess is often represented as three phases of the moon. The moon is powerful, and that power can be added to your craft by harnessing its power in moon water.
Moon water is water that has been charged under the moon and absorbed its energy. Though this is usually done under a full moon, water can charge under any phase of the moon to absorb that phase’s particular energy. Each phase of the moon has its own special energy and power, as does each month’s full moon. Keep an eye out for future articles about the powers of different types of full moons!
While you can make moon water by simply placing distilled water in the moonlight to charge overnight, making a ritual of it adds to its ability to absorb power and energy and strengthens the moon water.
Once you’ve made your moon water, there are many different ways you can use it. Here are some ideas for incorporating moon water into your daily life and your craft.
Use It in Spells and Rituals in Your Witchcraft
The primary use of moon water is in dedicated spell and ritual work as part of practicing Witchcraft. Here are some ways to bring moon water into your practice:
Use it on your altar by floating candles in it, using in an offering bowl, or cleansing your altar with it.
Use it for divination magick by adding it to a black bowl for divination, scrying, or applying it to your third eye chakra to enhance your clair-senses.
Make tools of the craft with it, such as anointing oils, rose water, Florida water, cone incense, or as the base for potions.
Activate your existing sigils or use it to draw sigils/runes around your home on doors, windows, and other entryways.
Make sure your tools aren’t muddled—cleanse your crystals, tarot cards, pendulums, scrying mirrors, runes, protection amulets, and more with your moon water.
Keep your intentions focused by adding some to your Witch’s balls or dabbing it on your vision board.
Give it in offering to faeries or deities you worship.
Carry a vial with you daily, so you always have it at the ready and to keep the moon’s energy close to you.
Food and Drink
Moon water is safe to consume (if created in a sealed container), so you can bring the energy into yourself by adding it to your food and drink. Here are a few ways to do that:
Brew your coffee and tea with it for a magickal start (or end) to the day.
When extra power is needed, drink it straight at the beginning of the day.
Love a morning smoothie? Add some moon water to focus the energy and intentions of the day.
Make ice cubes with it—increase their power by infusing them with flowers or herbs.
Cook with it—use it to boil noodles or as the base for stocks.
Cleansing
Moon water is great for cleansing! As we already mentioned, it is great for cleansing tools of the craft, but it can also be used to cleanse your home, yourself, and much more!
Cleanse yourself by adding it to your bath or in a shower rinse.
Add some to the washing machine in your next load of laundry (especially of ritual clothes).
Cleanse your home with it—make a home cleansing spray with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and moon water with citrus and herbs (orange and lemon, lavender, whatever energies and smells speak to you!) and use to wipe down counters and tables.
Can’t handle smoke or the smell of sage? Make a smokeless cleansing mist— in a misting bottle, combine the moon water with some cleansing essential oils and mist around your place to cleanse instead of using a smudge stick.
Get rid of the Febreze and make your own fabric refresher—moon water and essential oils can be combined in a spray bottle to be used on couches, beds, fabrics, and more!
Clean the floor of grime AND bad energy by adding moon water to your mop water.
Cleanse your beauty tools, like makeup brushes, with moon water.
Moon water and peppermint oil on windowsills and doorstops keep out negative energy and bugs.

Whether plants, friends, or pets, moon water is great for adding some extra care to your caretaking!

If you like to make homebrew, you can use moon water to make your own spirits at home (or even charge your favorite alcohol under the moon the same way you would water—serve some moon sangria at your next tapas night!)
