How to Restore Balance in Your Coven This Mabon: Tips for Wiccans

Once again, the Wheel of the Year turns towards Mabon. The Sabbat celebrating the Welsh god of light and son of the earth mother, Modron. During Mabon, the dark and light find themselves in perfect balance. This equilibrium spurs many practitioners to focus on finding balance and peace within themselves and their homes. But this year, do something a little different and focus on Mabon’s energy of peace and balance within your coven.

For many practitioners, Mabon can represent a variety of different aspects. Some practitioners focus on the aspects of the harvest and abundance. Their energy is concentrated on thankfulness and gratitude for the bounty of the earth. But other practitioners see it as a time to honor the darker aspects of the goddess. In a brief moment, the perfect balance will shift, and darkness will begin to reign over the light.

Mabon is a time of both positive and negative energy. Whether you celebrate the abundance of the harvest or the coming of the darkness, Mabon is a time of balance. However, this moment of balance contains a lot of powerful energy. And for some, this high level of energy can cause feelings of restlessness and agitation. So if your coven seems to be a bit off during this time of balance, you aren’t alone!

This time of year is fraught with energy, so use it to help push your coven closer together rather than further apart. For many practitioners, choosing to follow an earth-centered path means striving to achieve balance in our lives. Often, we strive to find balance in our own lives and forget that our coven also needs balance. Working in a group requires extra energy to build relationships and keep them in harmony with one another. This requires both dedication and patience, both of which can wax and wane just like the moon. Internal coven issues, as well as external forces, can throw off the balance of a coven, so it is important to nourish the bonds and rebalance from time to time.

Finding a healthy balance in a coven can sometimes be difficult. As our energies come together, a lot of factors can unexpectedly jumble things up. Time commitments to work and families can pull coven members away from rituals and group meetings. Being away from the group means less of a personal connection to the other members and fewer shared experiences. When this happens, members can feel like they don’t belong, especially if they are already feeling overwhelmed.

However, rearranging schedules can be difficult, and sometimes the imbalance comes not from time commitments but personality conflicts. Different personalities can clash, causing strife and imbalance to occur in a coven. Therefore, it is important to keep the lines of communication open between coven members and provide space for people to air their grievances and express their feelings respectfully.

The amount of time and commitment from coven members might also be a bit off-kilter. Maybe one person is contributing more in time, energy, or financial resources. While it is wonderful to have someone step up and help, this can cause people to burn out and feel resentful. It is important to balance resources and share responsibilities in a coven.

The gender of members can also throw a coven off balance and out of whack. When too much feminine or masculine energy begins to crowd out other members, it is time to rebalance! That doesn’t mean finding members of a certain gender to literally balance out a mixed coven. It simply means taking time to remember that both the masculine and feminine reside in each of us and finding the space to honor them both equally. Remember, Mabon is all about balance!

It is so easy for covens to get pushed off balance, but it takes work to get back to being balanced. But the good news is that it is often easier to find balance with other people. The interactive support of coven members can help push everyone in a positive direction until equilibrium is once again achieved.

Here are some ways to help you find balance and peace in your coven this Mabon.

Remember that balance is not a final goal. There is no defining point where everyone will look at one another and say, “Ah, we found balance.” Balance is something that ebbs and flows just like the tide. It is only for a moment during Mabon that the light and dark are equal, a fleeting moment in which everything once again begins to shift. So instead of trying to find balance, think of it instead as practicing balance within the group.

Goals help us to remain balanced. As a coven, decide what is most important to your collective practice and then do those things first. While this is much easier said than done, take time as a group to determine what is most important to your spiritual practice.

If spell work is most important, take the year to focus on honing your magickal skills. If being visible in the community and helping initiate new practitioners is the focus, get out there and be seen! Whatever your focus, determine how each person can play an active role towards reaching the collective goal.

As night and day are again of equal length, take this brief moment to balance and bring peace to your coven. We need the dark to balance the light, the feminine to balance the masculine, the inner solitude to balance the outer community. These opposites are merely opposing forces that each bring their own unique energy to life and spirituality. Once again, we are on the cusp of transition as the cycle of the world slowly shifts and the days grow darker. As the trees change color and the sap returns to the roots, celebrate both the fire as well as the darkness this Mabon. And remember being balanced doesn’t mean everyone is calm and relaxed all the time. In fact, balance requires a lot of energy and effort!

Coven Protection Spell

While Mabon is a great time for protection spells for your home, the same is true for your coven. Most Sabbats are reserved for celebrating the turning of the Wheel of the Year, but this year use the high spiritual energy of Mabon to protect your coven. The equinox provides a unique point in time where nature is literally hanging in the balance. It is during this perfect fleeting moment that we can tap into the powerful energy of the earth and add strength to our spells.

Mabon is a time of rest after laboring through the harvest. It is the time in which we are able to reap what has been sown, to look at our hopes and dreams and see how they have manifested throughout the year as we will find peace and reflection in the coming darkness. But to find peace, we must feel safe. And to be safe, we need to be protected.

In this ritual, we will draw from the strength of one another, giving and receiving energy from one another in balance with Mabon. As a group, we shall stand at the point of equilibrium, poised between light and dark, unfolding and enfolding to work a magickal protection spell just before the balance once again tips.

Materials:

  • mason jar

  • candle (preferably white, but whatever color the coven chooses together)

  • a few handfuls of dirt

  • wax stamp (optional)

Each coven member should bring something to contribute to the protection jar. This could be a dried herb, salt, or gem. Prior to the ritual, each coven member should research what magickal item represents protection to them and why they chose this item.

The empty jar should be placed in the middle of the altar. Practitioners should stand around the altar in a circle. The leader should place several handfuls of dirt at the bottom of the jar and say, “This is the earth upon which each of us stands. It is our beginning and our end, and throughout our journey, it keeps us anchored to the earth. It nourishes and protects us just as we nourish and protect one another.” Then, one at a time, each person should bring their item (herb, salt, gem, etc.) to put into the jar. As it is placed in the jar, each practitioner should share why they chose this item for protection.

For example, black tourmaline is a powerful protector. It is used to block psychic attacks and helps to eliminate unwanted thought patterns. In addition, it grounds negative energy, leaving a neutral space ready to be filled with positivity and light.

When the final item is placed in the jar, the leader should light the white candle and seal it with the wax. A wax stamp can be placed upon the top of the lid if desired. The coven should then link hands and raise a cone of power for further protection.

The jar should be placed on the altar or near the group during any ritual and spell work for protection. It can be entrusted to a single, specific member or shared throughout the coven.
