Have you moved recently, or are you thinking of redecorating? If you want to incorporate your Craft into your new décor, there are some fantastic pieces of witchy art out there. Before you start searching for the perfect piece, though, consider what purpose the art will serve in your home.
Here are some things you should consider.
How will you use the piece?
There are many ways to use art. Will it be a part of your altar decorations? Perhaps it is something you want to adorn your Book of Shadows. Maybe it will be part of a permanent vision board. Or perhaps you just want something beautiful and magickal to adorn your wall
and simply exist as art in your home.
What kind of piece are you looking for?
There are many different types of art. Sculpture, paintings, photography… the list goes on. Is there a specific medium that speaks to you? There may not be, which is fine! But you might decide that you really want a painting or a statue. Think about your purpose for the piece and its place in your home, which brings us to…
Where is the piece going to go?
Where in your home do you want the new piece of art to live? This can help inform the first question of what kind of piece you are after. If you don’t have room on your walls (or have restrictions on hanging things because you are renting), you likely need to choose a different
form of art.
Also, consider the other elements of the room you want the piece in. What furniture, art, architecture, etc., will it be surrounded by?
What is the light like in the space? Will you need to get lighting, or is there enough natural light?
What magickal properties are you trying to enhance?
Witchy art can provide some new magickal energies to your space. Is there a specific part of your practice you want the art to reflect, such as divination? Are you looking for a piece that more generally reflects the practice of Witchcraft? Perhaps you are very tied to the phases of the moon and her magick and wish to have a piece that helps you harness moon energy. Think about the purpose of your new piece of art.
How subtle/explicit will it be?
Some Witches proudly and loudly practice their Craft, and their art might make that even more abundantly clear. Others are still practicing in the broom closet and want art that is a little more subtle. Perhaps you are looking for something a little in between.
Choosing Art
Now that you’ve given some consideration to what kind of piece you might be looking for and its purpose, you are probably wondering where to start in your search. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are some ideas of the type of art you might buy for your home.
Tarot-Based Art
If there is a particular deck you are fond of, you can likely find the art in poster form.
Plant-Based Art
If you are a green, cottage, or kitchen witch, you may want pieces related to that. You can buy artwork, take photographs, or even make copies of plant information from books at the library to hang as art.
Witch-Made Art
You can look on Etsy and other websites for witchy art made by fellow Witches! Whether you love the alchemy vibe or relate more to the “moonchild” aesthetics, you can find art that speaks to you and support an artist directly.
Astrology
There is no shortage of art based on astrological signs out there, so if astrology is a large part of your practice, a series of pieces that display the zodiac could be a good idea.
Deities and Symbols of the Craft
The Triple Goddess, the Horned God, your patron deities, the sun, and the moon—parts of your Craft that might seem “everyday” can be subjects of some truly beautiful art.
Wherever you begin, be prepared to pivot when searching for your piece. You might have started looking for your bedroom but might find a piece better suited to your study. You might have started out searching for a piece tied to your tarot practice but find something better suited to bring energy to your potion-making. Don’t be so focused on the original goal that you miss out on a perfect piece for somewhere or something else!
Blessing Your Art
You may wish to cleanse your art if it was previously owned by someone else, to remove their energy and connection. You also want to take the time to bless your art. It should be a two-part process—beginning before placement and finishing once the piece is placed. The blessing will help amplify the magickal energy of the piece and allow it to serve its purpose in your home.
Placing Your Art
As we mentioned, you must be prepared to pivot. What are the magickal intentions of the piece? You’ll want to place it where you will most frequently engage in the activities that are tied to those intentions and energies.
We also mentioned light before. Not only does it matter for displaying the piece, but it matters for the magickal properties as well. If the art is tied to moon energy, will it be in a place where direct moonlight will touch it? How will the different colors of the sun throughout the day change the piece and interact with its energies?
If it is a poster, painting, or photograph, how can the frame play into the energies and intentions of the piece? What wood are you choosing for it? What color? You could choose to decorate it with sigils, runes, or symbols related to the art’s subject.
We’ve talked about the surroundings as well when you’ve decided what type of piece, but now that you have it, consider the surroundings in relation to its magick. You can place candles or crystals that match the colors or energies of the piece near it. If you chose art representative of nature, a live plant might be a good choice as an accessory near the art.
