Ostara Fertility Diet
Whether you’re just beginning your fertility journey or you’ve been trying for a while, you might be looking for a magickal boost to your efforts. Spells and rituals are great ways to help you manifest your intentions, but magickal diets help you bring that energy into yourself and create manifestation throughout the day for a prolonged period of time. A magickal diet should have a specific time frame when you set out to do it. For example, you may want to have your fertility diet start a few days before you or your partner is scheduled to start ovulating and end a few days after.
It is important to remember that magickal practices such as spells, rituals, and kitchen witchery can assist us in manifesting our intentions, but they can’t cure physical ailments alone. If you’ve been tested and there are no physical obstacles to fertility, a fertility diet can help enhance your chances. If you need medical assistance to get pregnant, a fertility diet will not take the place of that. It should be used in conjunction with it. For example, do a fertility diet before, during, and after going for in vitro treatments. If using a surrogate, ask if she’d be willing to partake in a magickal diet to protect and bless the pregnancy. You shouldn’t do the fertility diet in place of medical assistance. You should do a fertility diet to enhance and empower medical assistance.
As we know, Ostara is a sabbat that celebrates fertility and is strong in fertility energy. The Mother Goddess is awakening from winter, pregnant with spring and summer, ready to bring life back to the dormant world. Symbols of the sabbat reflect that—eggs, seeds, chicks, lambs, etc. That makes this sabbat a great time to partake in a fertility diet. If your ovulation time doesn’t overlap with the sabbat and you don’t want to extend the diet, do a ritual on the sabbat focused on fertility. Bless something you will have in your bedroom (or wherever you and your partner have sex) to contribute to your fertility efforts. You may also want to bless a shelf-stable food, such as strawberry preserves, on the sabbat to then eat during your dedicated fertility diet.
Ostara is also a sabbat of balance. The Earth is in a state of balance, with day and night, light and dark being exactly equal on the equinox. That makes it a great sabbat to work on fertility as well. You want to find the right balance when working towards something that won’t show results right away, that can become frustrating or upsetting, and that takes effort from both you and your partner. As you plan and execute your fertility diet around Ostara, remember to think not just about the plentiful energies of the sabbat but also the balancing and grounding energies. Use those to help you and your partner not to feel overwhelmed.
When prepping food for your fertility diet, as with all kitchen witchery, make sure you keep your intentions focused and visualize the energies that you are calling upon. Eat with purpose. You may wish to light green candles during preparation and while eating. You can light incense that assists with fertility, such as patchouli, poppy, or rose. You can place stones like agate, coral, and jade near your preparation area, your table, or your bedside. You may choose to eat a portion of the fertility foods in bed with your partner to bring that energy not only into yourselves but to the space you’ll be connecting in.
Some foods that are strong in fertility energy are:
Fruits for Fertility
fig
grape
mulberry
pomegranate
strawberry
Other Foods for Fertility
barley
eggs
egg breads
hazelnut
hot-cross buns
milk
poppy seed
rice
sesame
watercress
Though these foods are the strongest, any foods that represent the early stages of life will work for fertility diets. Seeds and nuts of almost any type can be included in a fertility diet. You may also want to look at foods with certain medicinal qualities. For example, some studies suggest that replacing animal proteins with beans and lentils for protein can reduce infertility issues. They are also high in folic acid, which helps with conception and fetal development. Avocados help your body absorb vitamins. For men, salmon can help raise semen levels thanks to its high levels of selenium and vitamin D.
Some additional fertility correspondences to be aware of:
Day of the week: Monday
Animals: rabbits, chicks, frogs, storks
Colors: green, yellow
Element: Earth
Planet: Moon (if your ovulation happens on a night of a full moon, that’s a chance you don’t want to miss!)
Herbs: daffodil, geranium, hazel, sunflower
Trees: birch, fig, pine
Numbers: 3, 7, 12
Complementary Diets for Fertility
Check out our Magickal Diets series for more information on the below, but when working with a fertility diet, consider doing a series of related magickal diets. As a reminder, magickal diets are intended to be finite, with visualizations and intentions focused. If you’re doing a two-week fertility diet, you may want to do a sex or love diet previously and a health and healing diet after, for example.
Our three-part Magickal Diets series covers a few different types of magickal diets that you may want to try in conjunction with a fertility diet. Here is an overview of a few of them:
Health and Healing Diets
Beyond nutrition, certain foods have healing and healthy energies. A health and healing diet can help when you are struggling with the mental anguish of prolonged fertility attempts or just trying to amplify your health to improve fertility. Though it can be tempting to do the health and healing diet before the fertility diet, you might find more success doing it after. That way, you are healing from any emotional pain that might be occurring and hopefully preventing it from impacting your efforts to get pregnant. You can find more information in our “Magickal Diets Part 3” piece, but here is an overview of the foods to strive for and avoid.

Sex Diets
If you’re aiming to get pregnant the old-fashioned way, amping up your sex life is a must-do! Focusing on a sex diet in the week leading up to your fertility diet can help stoke those passions and increase desire. When dealing with fertility struggles (or just the goal of getting pregnant in general), sex can sometimes come to feel like a chore. Help reduce that feeling and keep the flames dancing and the heat between you white hot with a sex diet. More information on sex diets and aphrodisiacs can be found in our “Magickal Diets Part 3” article. Here are the foods to focus on and avoid for a sex diet.

Love is not necessary for sex or procreation, but very often, it is part of starting a family. If doing a series of diets, you might want to start with a love diet before moving on to sex and then fertility. Though love diets mostly focus on romantic love, you can call up and amplify love energies that go to the familial love, having that power grow in you to create welcoming energy for your future child.
